Opposition lawmaker Eitan Cabel (Zionist Union) was questioned under caution Thursday alongside Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper publisher Arnon Mozes at the Lod offices of the anti-corruption police unit Lahav 433 in connection to a corruption probe involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Cabel and Mozes have faced off during the questioning, Channel 10 reported.

The probe, known as Case 2000, involves a suspected illicit quid-pro-quo deal between Netanyahu and Mozes that would have seen the prime minister weaken a rival daily, the Sheldon Adelson-backed Israel Hayom, through government legislation in return for more favorable coverage of him in Yedioth.

MK Cabel had proposed the so-called “Israel Hayom Bill” to make it illegal to distribute a full-sized newspaper for free — a proposal to which the prime minister was so opposed, some reports have claimed, that he called new elections in 2015.

Cabel was previously questioned in the probe in January 2017; Mozes has been grilled on several occasions in the case.

Netanyahu is also a suspect in the so-called Case 1000, in which he and his wife, Sara, are suspected of receiving illicit gifts from billionaire benefactors, most notably hundreds of thousands of shekels’ worth of cigars and champagne from the Israeli-born Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan.

Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing in both cases. He has been questioned seven times in connection with the affairs.

State Attorney Shai Nitzan said last week he hoped police will submit their recommendations regarding the corruption probes into Netanyahu within weeks, pushing back against suggestions that the investigations into the prime minister were being delayed for extraneous reasons.

Earlier, Hadashot TV news reported that police had revised their plan to submit the recommendations in the first weeks of the year, with the investigation set to continue for several more months.
