After being diagnosed with leukemia, Kaitlin O’Connor’s best friend Blake Mounts learned he wouldn’t be able to leave the hospital to go to the homecoming dance.
“The plan was for him to be able to leave the hospital for an hour or two on the night of our homecoming to attend the dance, but after getting news of the severity of the cancer, that was no longer an option,” Kaitlin told Yahoo. Blake is set to remain in the hospital for at least four months for chemotherapy treatments and a bone marrow transplant.
Nurses told Kaitlin that she had just five days before Blake’s chemotherapy treatments would sideline him for an extended period of time. With that in mind, Blake’s sister Taylor came up with the idea that if Blake couldn’t go to the dance, they would bring it to him. Kaitlin, Taylor and some of their other friends quickly got to work to make a room at the hospital look like a true homecoming dance.
“His family helped in picking out the outfit he would wear and bought me a corsage and boutonniere, so I carried that down with me along with the sign I made to officially ask him to homecoming,” Kaitlin said.
Not only did Kaitlin work tirelessly to get the hospital homecoming put together, her kindness extended to create a GoFundMe page to help with Blake’s medical expenses.
Kaitlin posted photos of her and Blake at the dance, along with some of their closest friends. The pictures of her heartwarming deed have gone viral, with nearly 300,000 “likes” on Twitter, as of Tuesday afternoon.
